What Bloggers are Earning
Done right, bloggers can easily make a 6 figure living. Here are two example of getting done right. TechCrunch and John Chow are two major players in blogousphere. These blogs have a lot of traffic and have developed an extremely valuable blog.
TechCrunch: Top five ranking blog on Technorati top 100 blogs. What does that ranking get you? A blog who’s value is in the millions. Hard to say exactly what they earn but what they charge advertisers for an ad can be found on their Advertise page. These numbers are astounding.
For 125 x 125 ads on right side of the page they have different rate plans which start from $8000 to $21500 per month per ad. They also use AdSense ads on there blog. Advertisers can also advertise with CPM ads as well. TechCrunch uses Federated Media’s services to advertise CPM ads. There CPM rates for 160×600, 728×90 and 300×250 ads are about $23 per CPM and you have to purchase minimum of 140 CPM which will cost you about $3220. So you can see where these numbers can really add up, but they can offer you exposure that rivals a major television spot.
These figures can blow your mind, but keep in mind that there are many expenses to running a major blog like TechCrunch so it is hard to determine their exact earnings.
John Chow: An Internet mogul with ties to many blogs and tech website all of which earn him money. One of his more popular blogs on blogging receives more then 200,000 visitors per month with Alexa ranking of 27,281. How Blogging are Earning
CPC Ad Networks
There are a few different ad networks that you can use on CPF. The most successful one, by far, has been Google’s Adsense program. Basically, what they do is read the article that I write and find ads that are relevant to it and display them next to the article. The great thing about it is that by having extremely relevant ads, it actually can be quite beneficial to the readers as well. For example, if I write an article reviewing the Apple iPad, but didn’t mention where you could get one, Adsense would likely be displaying ads of places where you could get an iPad.
So as a reader, if I read that article and decided that I did want to get an iPad, the ads would be providing options that the article did not. All things considered, if optimized correctly, Adsense really can work well.
CPM Ad Networks
While Adsense pays on a click basis (CPC), some other ad networks pay by the total # of impressions (CPM). For new bloggers, these networks won’t produce much income, but as your traffic grows, CPM networks seem to work well in conjunction with Adsense. There are a few of networks the big timers use: ContextWeb, AdClickMedia,Adbrite, Adify, BuzzLogic, and Casale Media. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses and may be suitable for one kind of a site and not another.
Affiliate Product Sales
Basically an example of an affiliate sale would be if you sold lawn mowers and I referred a customer to you, if they purchased you would pay me back a % of the sale for referring them, just that simple. There are a million options for this on the internet now. The main programs used by many successful bloggers are Amazon’s Affiliate program, FlexOffers, LinkConnector,Commission Junction, Shareasale, E-Junkie, and LinkShare. There are many others, but these are a few of the more popular ones available. Recently, another has emerged, Viglink, which allows you to automatically turn all our links on your site to affiliate links. Worth checking out.
I cannot speak for you, but I have a very strong policy about honest recommendations. I give my honest opinions about products that I find regardless of how it will affect affiliate sales. If you feel the same way chances are you may not make as much with affiliate products. Good Tip: Seek out affiliate programs with products and services you actually endorse. Helping readers by pointing them to good resources and tools that have helped you will go a long way with your readers and get you paid in the process.
Direct Ad Sales
Selling ad space directly to advertisers is another option you can use to earn money from blogging. Recently, this hasn’t provided as much income as it has in the past. I know that in certain niche markets direct ad sales can work out very well, but on average, just has not produced consistently.
